KL woos foreign investors<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia is willing to ease restrictions
\nholding foreign investors to minority positions in joint ventures
\nif the projects feature technologies new to the country, a
\nminister was reported saying Saturday.<\/p>\n
\"Normally, for such projects, the government only allows
\nminority shareholding to foreign investors,\" International Trade
\nand Industry Minister Rafidah Aziz was quoted saying by the
\nBernama news agency.<\/p>\n
Under a new plan to boost industrialization, foreigners might
\nbe allowed major equity in local joint-ventures for a stipulated
\nperiod if they brought technologies \"really new, sophisticated
\nand not available in the country,\" Rafidah said.<\/p>\n
The foreign parties would have to ultimately divest their
\nmajority stake to Malaysian firms, as the objective of the plan
\nwas to boost technology of local industries, she said.<\/p>\n
Such technologies should produce better goods, facilitate
\ntechnological development, enhance research and development and
\ncreate more effective marketing systems, Rafidah said.<\/p>",
