        "content": "<p>KL to sell off steel firm<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): The Malaysian government said Monday it is<br>\nconsidering selling Perwaja Steel, which has recorded losses<br>\ntotaling billions of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Finance Minister Shafie Mohamed Salleh said the<br>\ngovernment would consider offers for its wholly-owned steel maker<br>\nfrom any financially able company that also has the necessary<br>\nexpertise.<\/p>\n<p>He told the Senate (upper house of parliament) that a study by<br>\nthe Corporate Debt Restructuring Committee showed that the local<br>\nsteel industry suffered badly from the (1998) economic downturn<br>\nand from low demand.<\/p>\n<p>Perjawa, sited in the northeastern state of Terengganu, was<br>\nplanned as the centerpiece of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's<br>\nindustrialization drive in the early 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>Instead the plant became one of the country's most spectacular<br>\ncorporate disasters.<\/p>\n<p>It had accumulated losses and liabilities totaling 9.9 billion<br>\nringgit (now US$2.6 billion) by 1996.<\/p>",
