        "content": "<p>KL to protect domestic workers<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (Reuter): Malaysia will amend its employment laws<br>\nto enable it to prosecute employers who sack Malaysian workers<br>\nand replace them with foreigners, the national Bernama news<br>\nagency reported yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Human Resources Minister Lim Ah Lek said the government would<br>\namend the Employment Act 1955 and pending the change, Malaysia<br>\nwould revoke the work permits of foreigners working for employers<br>\nwho recruited them to replace locals.<\/p>\n<p>Labor-starved Malaysia, with a population of about 21 million,<br>\nhas an estimated two million foreigners working for lower wages,<br>\nhalf of them illegal.<\/p>\n<p>Since announcing the registration campaign, Malaysia has<br>\nlaunched a nationwide operation to round up illegal workers,<br>\nincluding going house-to-house to check on maids' working papers.<\/p>",
