        "content": "<p>KL to probe log smuggling case<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (Reuter): Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Anwar<br>\nIbrahim has ordered a probe into a suspected log smuggling<br>\noperation in Malaysian Borneo, the national news agency Bernama<br>\nsaid yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who visited Sabah on<br>\nMonday, ordered the probe after Malaysian authorities on Saturday<br>\nintercepted an illegal shipment of timber. The shipment, worth<br>\nsix million ringgit ($2.4 million), was on its way to Japan.<\/p>\n<p>\"I have directed the marine, forestry and customs departments<br>\nto submit a detailed report on the matter and not deal with the<br>\nproblem half-heartedly,\" Bernama quoted Anwar as saying.<\/p>\n<p>\"I regard the problem as serious,\" Anwar said, adding that the<br>\npowerful Anti-Corruption Agency might be asked to step in because<br>\nthe smuggling had been \"taking place for a long time\".<\/p>\n<p>Anwar did not say where the logs originated.<\/p>\n<p>But executives of timber companies in the east Malaysian state<br>\nof Sabah on Borneo island told Reuters the logs were illegally<br>\nfelled in Indonesia's Kalimantan province on Borneo and smuggled<br>\ninto Sabah for re-export.<\/p>\n<p>\"The (Malaysian) government does not want to say it, but<br>\nthat's the truth,\" a timber company owner said by telephone from<br>\nSabah's capital of Kota Kinabalu.<\/p>\n<p>Bernama said the Malaysian-registered \"Able Helmsman\" vessel<br>\nwas detained with 2,800 logs, with a total volume of 16,000 cubic<br>\nmetres, between Sabah's Wallace Bay and a tiny island called<br>\nPulau Sebatik, which runs along the Indonesian border.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia has long banned all log exports.<\/p>",
