KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia is to double terminal handling
\nfees for cargo shipped via Singapore as it steps up shipping
\nrivalry with Singapore, officials said yesterday.<\/p>\n
The Malaysian authorities are bent on retrieving shipping
\nbusiness lost to neighboring Singapore.<\/p>\n
"A meeting will be held among officials of the transport
\nministry, shippers, freight forwarders and ports to decide on the
\nimplementation date," a transport ministry official said.<\/p>\n
The move followed a cabinet directive on Wednesday that all
\ngovernment imports come through the main west coast Port Klang,
\nMalaysia's premier port, without passing through Singapore.<\/p>\n
Transport Minister Ling Liong Sik said Thursday that exporters
\nand importers would have to pay higher terminal handling charges
\nfor conducting transactions via Singapore port.<\/p>\n
If doubled, local shippers, even in Malaysia's southern Johore
\nstate nearest to Singapore, would find it cheaper to use Port
\nKlang, he said.<\/p>",
