        "content": "<p>KL slams U.S. for interference<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AP): Under increasing pressure to free<br>\nopposition activists sent to jail without trial for up to two<br>\nyears, the Malaysian government defended a tough security law and<br>\naccused the United States of interfering in its internal affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, quoted on<br>\nThursday in local media, rejected criticism of his order to<br>\nextend the detention of four activists arrested in April, saying<br>\nthe move was justified and was \"not done for fun.\"<\/p>\n<p>Abdullah was responding to comments by U.S. State Department<br>\nspokesman Richard Boucher, who said in Washington that, \"The<br>\nUnited States is deeply concerned about the detentions, which<br>\nseem intended to prevent the detainees, against whom there are no<br>\ncriminal charges, from exercising internationally recognized<br>\nrights of free speech, political expression, and assembly.\"<\/p>\n<p>Abdullah said Malaysia had been \"more peaceful\" since the<br>\nactivists' arrest and that previous opposition demonstrations had<br>\n\"inconvenienced people.\"<\/p>",
