        "content": "<p>KL sends orangutans home to Medan<\/p>\n<p>MALAYSIA: Six Sumatran orangutans that were smuggled into<br>\nMalaysia and displayed at a theme park for almost four years have<br>\nbeen flown home, reports said on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The primates were flown to Jakarta on Saturday aboard a<br>\nMalaysia Airlines flight dubbed the &quot;Orangutan special&quot;, and<br>\ntransferred to a Garuda flight for their final destination in a<br>\nMedan wildlife sanctuary, the New Straits Times said.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to return the orangutans, aged between three and<br>\nfour years old, was made after the wildlife department conducted<br>\na DNA finger-printing exercise following a tip-off.<\/p>\n<p>The Sumatran orangutan is listed on Appendix 1 of the<br>\nConvention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES)<br>\nwhich means they are critically endangered status and cannot be<br>\ntraded.<\/p>\n<p>An estimated 7,500 Sumatran orangutans remain in the wild. --<br>\nAFP<\/p>",
