        "content": "<p>KL pushing for ban on nuke arms<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia will push for the early<br>\ncompletion of a draft treaty banning nuclear weapons in Southeast<br>\nAsia during the ASEAN Summit in Bangkok later this month, news<br>\nreports said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia&apos;s Foreign Ministry deputy secretary-general Hasmy<br>\nAgam was quoted saying such a zone would complement the Roratonga<br>\nTreaty of the South Pacific Nuclear-free Zone, thereby making<br>\nmost of the Pacific region nuclear-free,<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We believe the acquisition, use or threat of use of these<br>\nweapons of mass destruction is morally wrong,&quot; he told the New<br>\nSunday Times.<\/p>\n<p>The heads of the governments of Association of Southeast Asian<br>\nNations member countries will be at the Bangkok summit scheduled<br>\nfor Dec. 14. The seven-member ASEAN grouping is also pushing<br>\nahead to include Laos, Cambodia and Burma by the end of the<br>\ndecade.<\/p>\n<p>Hasmy lambasted the nuclear-weapon states&apos; doctrine of<br>\ndeterrence based on the logic of mutually-assured destruction,<br>\ndescribing it as myopic and suicidal.<\/p>",
