KL probes anti-dumping<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia launched an anti-dumping probe
\nyesterday concerning imports of \"self copy paper\" from France,
\nthe United Kingdom and Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of International Trade and Industry said it had
\nreceived a joint petition from two local firms that these
\ncountries were selling the products here at a price much lower
\nthan in their domestic markets.<\/p>\n
Self copy paper allows writing to be copied between two sheets
\nwithout the use of carbon paper.<\/p>\n
\"The petitioners had provided evidence that imports from the
\nalleged countries had increased significantly in terms of
\nquantity and market share,\" the ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The companies also claimed they were forced to lower their
\nprices to compete with these imports, and their profitability had
\nbeen affected.<\/p>\n
\"The government, having determined there is sufficient
\nevidence of dumping... has decided to commence investigations,\"
\nthe ministry said.<\/p>\n
A preliminary decision would be made in 90 days whether there
\nwould be a need to impose \"anti-dumping duty at a level that
\nwould eliminate the dumping\", it said.<\/p>\n
According to the ministry, the government could also backdate
\nthe imposition of the duty to the date of the probe if it found
\nthere was a sudden surge in imports of the product in lieu of the
\nimposition of the duty.<\/p>\n
Malaysia is expected to register a trade deficit of 7.144
\nbillion ringgit (US$2.8 billion) in 1996, a fall of nearly two
\nbillion ringgit compared with last year, a government report said
\nlast week.<\/p>\n
Exports were expected to reach 219.727 billion ringgit against
\nimports of 226.871 billion ringgit.<\/p>",
