KL police fight porn peddlers<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AP): Malaysian police will use a law allowing
\ndetention without trial against peddlers of pornography who have
\nthreatened officers enforcing a nationwide crackdown.<\/p>\n
Over the past month, senior officials responsible for a
\nclampdown on street stalls selling illegal and pornographic video
\ncompact disks have received death threats from gangs involved in
\nthe trade.<\/p>\n
Ramly Yussuf, director of the police Criminal Investigations
\nDepartment, was cited by The Star newspaper Friday as saying
\nauthorities were fed up with the threats and will invoke an
\nemergency ordinance to detain without trial anyone menacing
\nenforcement officers.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad last month ordered a
\nnationwide crackdown on pornography, saying he is worried over
\nits effects on society.<\/p>\n
Ramly said that more than 770 people have been arrested so far
\nin the crackdown. Lawmakers have pledged to tighten anti-porn
\nlaws, which have mostly been punishable by fines, to curb sexual
\nabuse and violence.<\/p>",
