        "content": "<p>KL plays down bridge issue with S'pore<\/p>\n<p>MALAYSIA: Malaysia on Tuesday played down a dispute with<br>\nSingapore over a bridge linking the two countries, days ahead of<br>\nthe new Malaysian leader's first official visit to the city-<br>\nstate.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia has said it wants to unilaterally work on a new<br>\nbridge across the 1.5-kilometer wide strait separating it from<br>\nthe island of Singapore, in order to ease traffic congestion on<br>\nthe existing bridge and causeway.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore's Foreign Minister Shanmugam Jayakumar said on<br>\nMonday that unilaterally building the bridge would be wrong,<br>\nbecause it would involve an international facility.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about Jayakumar's claim, Malaysia's Foreign Minister<br>\nSyed Hamid Albar on Tuesday told reporters: \"Whatever we want to<br>\ndo, we will do on our own territory ... without trying to impinge<br>\non the legal rights of others.\"<\/p>\n<p>The bridge proposal is likely to be among topics discussed<br>\nwhen Malaysia's Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi calls on his<br>\nSingapore counterpart Goh Chok Tong on Jan. 12. -- AP<\/p>",
