KL plans rubber price talk<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia will initiate talks with Thailand
\nand Indonesia to jointly map out new strategies to boost rubber
\nprices, which remain at 30-year lows, officials said Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Primary Industry Minister Lim Keng Yaik is to make a three-day
\nvisit to Bangkok from Thursday, where he will meet Thai Deputy
\nMinister of Agricultural and Cooperatives Arkom Angchoun, an aide
\ntold AFP.<\/p>\n
\"They will sign a memorandum of understanding on Friday to
\nenhance bilateral cooperation in the rubber industry,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The two leaders will also discuss ways to persuade Indonesia
\nto join forces to halt flagging rubber prices following the
\nfailure of the International Natural Rubber Organization (INRO),
\nhe added.<\/p>\n
Thailand is the world's largest rubber producer, followed by
\nIndonesia and Malaysia. The three countries account for almost 80
\npercent of world production.<\/p>\n
Both Malaysia and Thailand have announced their intention to
\nleave INRO, claiming the organization had failed to stabilize
\nrubber prices despite substantial contributions from members.<\/p>",
