KL media curbs condemned<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AP): International press rights groups called on
\nPrime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Thursday to lift curbs on an
\nanti-government magazine, saying that Malaysia's trend of
\nmuzzling media violated international conventions.<\/p>\n
The World Association of Newspapers and the Committee to
\nProtect Journalists, in separate statements faxed to news
\nagencies, joined growing condemnation of the government's move
\nnot to renew the printing license of Detik magazine, a Malay-
\nlanguage political magazine published twice a month.<\/p>\n
"We respectfully remind you that refusal of a publishing
\nlicense on political grounds is a clear breach of the right of
\nfreedom of expression, which is guaranteed by numerous
\ninternational conventions," the Paris-based World Association of
\nNewspapers said in a letter to Mahathir. Copies of the letter
\nwere forwarded to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and other
\nUnited Nations agencies.<\/p>\n
Detik was informed last week by the Home Affairs Ministry that
\nits printing permit, which had expired on Nov. 30, would not be
\nrenewed. Detik was launched last January amid huge public uproar
\nafter the sacking and jailing of Deputy Prime Minister Anwar
\nIbrahim.<\/p>",
