        "content": "<p>KL may freeze inflow of workers<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia is considering freezing<br>\nimmigration of Bangladeshi workers after Premier Mahathir<br>\nMohamad's ruling party blamed them for the country's rising<br>\nsecurity and social problems, officials said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\"The National Security Council will evaluate inputs on the<br>\nproblems caused by the Bangladeshis in the country when it meets<br>\non October 16 before a decision is made,\" a security official<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Mahathir's United Malays National Organization (UMNO)<br>\nexpressed grave concern last Friday over the social problems they<br>\nsaid were caused by Bangladeshis, who make up the second largest<br>\ncomponent of foreign workers in Malaysia, after the Indonesians.<\/p>\n<p>Concerns have risen here following reports that Bangladeshis<br>\nwere involved in fights with local residents and that Bangladeshi<br>\nmen were abandoning Malaysian women when their work permits<br>\nexpired.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia's rapid economic growth, averaging above eight<br>\npercent since 1987, and its acute worker shortage in recent years<br>\nhave led to the influx of expatriate labor.<\/p>",
