KL-Manila ties warmer<\/p>\n
MANILA (Reuter): Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad,
\nwho arrives in the Philippines yesterday, says ties between Kuala
\nLumpur and Manila have warmed considerably, despite last year's
\nroundups of Filipina maids in Malaysia.<\/p>\n
Mahathir said in a television interview, aired on Friday
\nevening, that relations improved after Philippine President Fidel
\nRamos visited Kuala Lumpur in 1993 to end decades of hostility
\ncaused by Manila claim's to the east Malaysian state of Sabah.<\/p>\n
"He brought in a different style," the Malaysian leader said,
\nadding that economic relations have blossomed as a result.<\/p>\n
Mahathir said two roundups of Filipina maids in Malaysia,
\nwhich triggered complaints from Manila, were meant to flush out
\nillegal workers. Kuala Lumpur was not discriminating against
\nFilipinas in its campaign against such workers, he said.
\n"Those actions will continue," he said.<\/p>\n
The Malaysian leader is on a two-day private visit and will
\nattend the launch ceremonies of the Proton Wira car.<\/p>",
