KL leader considers Thailand's request<\/p>\n
MALAYSIA: Malaysia's prime minister will consider Thailand's
\nrequest to extradite a suspected Muslim insurgent but urged the
\nThai government to stop making public its demands, news reports
\nsaid on Friday.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had earlier indicated the
\ngovernment may not extradite Chae Kumae Kuteh, the alleged leader
\nof the New Patani United Liberation Organization (PULO), one of
\nseveral separatist groups linked to violence in Thailand's
\npredominantly Muslim south.<\/p>\n
Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said Chae Kumae is a
\nThai national who should stand trial in Thailand, while his
\nforeign minister said a 1911 repatriation treaty between Britain
\n-- then Malaysia's colonial ruler -- and Thailand could be
\napplied.<\/p>\n
Abdullah said he would consider the request but insisted that
\nThailand not go through the media but through diplomatic
\nchannels, national news agency Bernama reported.<\/p>\n
The Star daily cited Abdullah as saying that once Malaysia
\nreceived the extradition request, "we will naturally have to look
\ninto it."<\/p>\n
Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar said Thailand must
\nprovide evidence to show Chae Kumae is a Thai citizen in
\nrequesting the extradition, the Star reported. --AP<\/p>",
