KL detains Myanmar refugee protesters<\/p>\n
MALAYSIA: Malaysian police detained about two dozen Myanmar
\nrefugees on Monday for protesting outside the office of the UN
\nrefugee agency to demand speedy resettlement, witnesses and
\nofficials said.<\/p>\n
Women and children were among the protesters, from the
\nRohingya ethnic group, who held up posters reading, \"We need
\nimmediate protection\", and \"We want speedy resettlement\", before
\npolice bundled them away, witnesses said.<\/p>\n
Rights groups and the UN refugee agency fear a drive by
\nMalaysia to deport illegal migrants, which began this month, puts
\nrefugees and asylum-seekers at risk of being returned to
\ncountries where they may suffer detention or torture.<\/p>\n
\"They have been arrested because of what was considered an
\nunlawful demonstration,\" Volker Turk, country representative of
\nthe United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), said.<\/p>\n
\"Of course we protested on their behalf, but immigration
\nauthorities have taken them away to verify their status and have
\nsaid they will release those who are found to be refugees.\"
