KL denies favoritism<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): The Malaysian government dismissed charges
\nyesterday it practised favoritism in handing out contracts,
\nsaying any able group with good ideas and track record could win
\nbusiness from the state.<\/p>\n
\"No group could pull strings with the government leadership to
\nget projects,\" Deputy Premier Anwar Ibrahim declared amid claims
\nby the opposition and frustrated quarters that nepotism dominated
\ndeals awarded by the ruling National Front.<\/p>\n
The opposition, led by the predominantly-ethnic Chinese
\nDemocratic Action Party (DAP), has consistently slammed the
\nNational Front for allegedly favoring only indigenous Malays and
\ncertain ethnic Chinese entreprenuers when handing out mega-deals.<\/p>\n
Among contracts which fell under the opposition spotlight
\nrecently was the privatization of a national sewage project and a
\nhuge hydro-electric dam, both multi-billion-dollar deals awarded
\nto selected parties reportedly without public tender.<\/p>\n
Anwar said multi-racial Malaysia had a policy to safeguard the
\nwelfare and development of the Malays but this had never
\nprevented it from being fair to other races, including ethnic
\nIndians.<\/p>",
