KL delegation to E. Timor<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid
\nAlbar said Tuesday he would lead a delegation to East Timor to
\nseek investment opportunities and help the violence-torn
\nterritory to develop.<\/p>\n
The three-day visit from Wednesday was part of a cabinet
\ndecision to find out what sort of help Malaysia could give East
\nTimor, Syed Hamid was quoted by the official news agency Bernama
\nas saying.<\/p>\n
It was also a follow-up to requests by pro-independence leader
\nXanana Gusmao and the UN administrator Sergio Vieira de Mello who
\nhad visited Malaysia separately earlier this year, he said.<\/p>\n
\"We hope it would be the first step towards establishing
\nbilateral relations ... our attitude towards them is sincere and
\nwe will do whatever we can to develop their country,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Bernama said the ministerial-level visit would be the first
\namong Southeast Asian countries since East Timor voted for
\nindependence in a referendum conducted by the United Nations in
\nAugust last year.<\/p>\n
Syed Hamid said he would meet Gusmao and de Mello. His 21-
\nmember team of government and private sector representatives
\nwould also attend briefings by the World Bank and the Asian
\nDevelopment Bank in East Timor.<\/p>",
