        "content": "<p>KL cuts machinery imports<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad<br>\nsaid yesterday the government may impose import restrictions on<br>\nheavy equipment in an effort to nail the worsening balance of<br>\npayments deficit.<\/p>\n<p>Mahathir said imports of heavy machinery such as cranes,<br>\nexcavators and bulldozers had contributed significantly to the<br>\ncountry&apos;s balance of payments deficit.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;At the moment, we want traders to voluntarily stop importing<br>\nthe machinery but if they don&apos;t, we are thinking of putting<br>\nrestrictions on the import,&quot; the premier said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Traders must realize that this deficit is a national problem<br>\nand it will affect the traders themselves later on,&quot; he was<br>\nreported as saying by Bernama news agency in eastern Sarawak<br>\nstate on Borneo island.<\/p>\n<p>Mahathir said that if traders kept buying and &quot;keep on with<br>\nthe bad habit, the deficit will never go away.&quot;<\/p>",
