        "content": "<p>North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has said his country is equipping its\nnavy with nuclear weapons and unveiled plans to build a 10,000-ton\nwarship.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the remarks were\nmade on Tuesday at the commissioning of the Choe Hyon, one of two\n5,000-ton warships launched by the nuclear-armed state last year, in the\nport city of Nampo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe programme to equip the navy with nuclear weapons is proceeding\nas planned without error,\u201d Kim said at the ceremony. \u201cThis is a very\nimportant strategic step as it will enable our country\u2019s nuclear forces\nto be ready for diverse and efficient operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>North Korea has previously stated that the Choe Hyon is equipped with\n\u201cthe most powerful weapons\u201d, and Kim has conducted several inspections\nof vessels in the class this year, including overseeing a cruise missile\ntest from the Choe Hyon in April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing the Choe Hyon, we will soon operate the Kang Kon\ndestroyer. After that, we will launch strategic 10,000-ton warships one\nafter another,\u201d Kim said in his speech. Under the plan, North Korea must\n\u201cbuild two surface ships each year, of a class higher than the Choe\nHyon, including a 10,000-ton cruiser\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n<p>At a three-day party plenum that concluded on Monday, Kim pledged to\nenhance defence capabilities, citing military modernisation efforts by\nSouth Korea and the United States as pushing the region \u201cto the brink of\nnuclear war\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Pyongyang has repeatedly declared itself an \u201cirreversible\u201d nuclear\nstate since a 2019 summit between Kim and US President Donald Trump\ncollapsed over differences on the scope of denuclearisation and\nsanctions relief. North Korea remains under multiple sanctions related\nto its nuclear programme, and the two Koreas are technically still at\nwar as the 1950-1953 conflict ended with an armistice rather than a\npeace treaty.<\/p>",
