Kim Johannes may be charged again<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Finance Mar'ie Muhammad said
\nyesterday that the investigation of Kim Johannes, recently
\nacquitted from a corruption charge related to alleged fictitious
\nexports, could be reopened.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a hearing with the Budgetary Commission of the
\nHouse of Representatives, the minister said that the Attorney
\nGeneral's recent decision to drop the corruption charge against
\nKim was not final.<\/p>\n
\"There might be another development,\" he said when answering a
\nHouse member's questions about the Attorney General's recent
\ndecision to drop the corruption charge against Kim.<\/p>\n
Attorney General Singgih said last week that the investigation
\non Kim's possible involvement in the issuance of forged export
\ndocuments had been dropped due to the absence of adequate
\nevidence that Kim had inflicted a loss to the state.<\/p>\n
Kim was charged with issuing counterfeit export documents to
\nillegally obtain import duty and value-added tax rebates from the
\nExport Service Facilitating Agency and to obtain subsidized
\nexport credits from Bank Indonesia, the central bank.<\/p>\n
The minister told yesterday's hearing that he has assigned
\nthree top officials, Director General for Customs and Excise
\nSahardjo, Tax Director General Fuad Bawazier and Director General
\nfor Financial Institutions Bambang Subianto, to help the Attorney
\nGeneral investigate Kim's possible involvement in bank or export
\nfrauds.<\/p>\n
Mar'ie said that the Ministry of Finance issued at least five
\npermits per week to the police or the Attorney General's Office
\nto investigate bank accounts of the people accused of bank
\nfrauds.<\/p>\n
\"I am unable to explicitly disclose every case,\" the minister
\nsaid when he was questioned by Sri Bintang Pamungkas of the
\nUnited Development Party if the accounts of businessmen Robby
\nTjahjadi and Lili Sumantri were also investigated.<\/p>\n
Robby, the founder of the debt ridden Kanindotex and Sumantri,
\na former banker, were recently reported to have incurred huge bad
\ndebts at state-owned banks. (hen)<\/p>",
