Khaleda-Megawati talks<\/p>\n
At their talks in Jakarta, Indonesian President Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri and Bangladesh Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia
\nstruck a wider Asian note. They underscored the need for a larger
\nforum girdling SAARC and ASEAN in order to try and meet the
\nstupendous challenges of globalization.<\/p>\n
At a bilateral level, the signing of four treaties and two
\nmemorandums of understanding during the current visit of
\nBangladesh PM Khaleda Zia to Jakarta has been amply illustrative
\nof how productive their talks proved. Though there is a huge
\ntrade gap between the two countries, with the balance tilted
\nheavily towards Indonesia, assurances by Megawati that she would
\nencourage her country's businessmen to import more products from
\nBangladesh have gone down very well in Dhaka. Not only that, in
\nconcrete terms, she has agreed to accord duty-free access to 23
\nBangladeshi products in the Indonesian market.<\/p>\n
There is something that devolves on us following the extension
\nof duty-free access by another country. The gaining of liberal
\ntrade terms from Thailand and Indonesia means that we should
\nraise our productivity levels and diversify our exports, let
\nalone firm up the fiscal assistance package. The quality of our
\nproducts and the timeliness of our deliveries should leave
\nnothing to be desired.<\/p>\n
Getting back to the official talks, the emphasis on sharing of
\ninformation and intelligence among Asian countries pertaining to
\ncombating the problem of terrorism couldn't have come a day
\nearlier.<\/p>\n
Of immense potential importance is also the fact that in
\nmatters of exploration and extraction of natural resources,
\npatronex and Bapex, the public companies of the two countries,
\nwould enter into effective cooperation and share their
