Kenyan gets 15 years<\/p>\n
MEDAN, North Sumatra: The Medan District Court sentenced
\nJoseph Karanja Kamau, a 32-year-old Kenya citizen, to 15 years in
\nprison after he was found guilty of trafficking 73 capsules of
\nheroin weighing 800.15 grams.<\/p>\n
The verdict, which was read out by presiding judge Anwar
\nZahri, was more lenient than the prosecutor's demand of the death
\npenalty.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Mardiana Sianturi filed an appeal.<\/p>\n
The defendant expressed his relief upon hearing the verdict.
\nHis lawyer, Zuhdi Lubis, said that his client was happy not to
\nhave received the death penalty.<\/p>\n
Kamau was arrested by customs and excise officers at Polonia
\nMedan airport on Oct. 22, 2002. It was found that he had
\nswallowed 73 capsules containing heroin.<\/p>\n
He claimed that the heroin belonged to his friend Ahmad in
\nQatar. He was only told to carry the drugs to Medan and hand them

MANADO, North Sulawesi: A journalist working for the Manado
\nPost, Peggy Sampouw, 24, was allegedly assaulted by a civil
\nservant at the Manado mayoralty office on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
"Samadi, a civil servant at the mayoralty office, hit my face
\nthree times. He shouted while he was hitting me not to run
\n'certain articles'," Peggy told fellow journalists after
\nreporting the case to the Manado Police.<\/p>\n
Peggy suffered bleeding and bruising to her lips.<\/p>\n
The Manado Post chief editor Suhendro Moroma said he would
\nfile a lawsuit.<\/p>\n
The head of the local branch of the Alliance of Independent
\nJournalists (AJI), Remon Pasla, said that AJI would demand Manado
\nMayor Wempie Fredrik be held responsible for the incident.<\/p>\n
"The mayor should be responsible since the assault was
\ncommitted by a civil servant at his office. We allege the
\nviolation was related to a mayoralty project handled by the
\nmayor's wife, Ariane Nangoy," said Remon, who is also a
\njournalist with Komentar daily.<\/p>\n
He claimed that he had evidence of Ariane's involvement in
\nmonopolizing the mayoralty park's renovation project worth
\nbillions of rupiah.<\/p>\n
The case is being handled by the police but no charges have

JAYAPURA, Papua: The Indonesian Military acknowledged shooting
\ntwo men, one who subsequently died as a result of his injuries,
\nclaiming they were Papuan rebels, on Tuesday in Hut village, Tor
\nAtas district in Sarmi regency.<\/p>\n
Yotam Siam, 20, was shot in the left leg while Douglas Yaas,
\n18, was shot in the right leg and the stomach. Douglas died on
\nthe way to Sarmi community health center.<\/p>\n
Trikora Military Command spokesman Maj. CAJ GT Situmorang said
\nthat a gunfight erupted at 6 a.m. local time (4 a.m. Jakarta
\ntime) between a group of military soldiers and 10 rebels at Hut
\nvillage.<\/p>\n
Military personnel seized a rifle, a round of ammunition, a
\nnumber of traditional weapons and documents on the Free Papua
\nOrganization (OPM).<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Papua Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Daud Sihombing
\nsaid that he had not received any information about the shooting.<\/p>\n
