        "content": "<p>Kemayoran vendors out of business<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: Hundreds of makeshift stalls belonging to sidewalk <br>\nvendors along main roads in the Kemayoran area were demolished, <br>\nwhile their carts were taken to a government store in Cakung, <br>\nEast Jakarta, following a large-scale raid on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\"We carried out the raid at midday so as to avoid violence as <br>\nmany of the vendors were taking a rest,\" an officer from the <br>\nKemayoran district administration said, adding that about 90 <br>\npolice officers, soldiers and public order officers were deployed <br>\nto carry out the evictions.<\/p>\n<p>The evictions targeted vendors in front of the Serdang market <br>\non Jl. Serdang Raya, Jl. Benyamin Sueb, Jl. Letjen Suprapto and <br>\naround the Cempaka Mas commercial complex.<\/p>\n<p>\"We want to keep the area orderly,\" said Bambang Sugiono, an <br>\nassistant for economic and development affairs with the Central <br>\nJakarta municipal administration, as quoted by Tempointeraktif.<\/p>\n<p>Buyung, one of the vendors on Jl. Benyamin Sueb, said that <br>\ntheir presence there should not have been a problem as they <br>\nusually paid district administration officials for their sidewalk <br>\nsports.<\/p>\n<p>The vendors said they would have to pay Rp 600,000 (about <br>\nUS$70) each to get their carts back. -- JP<\/p>",
