Keep up role model image: Try<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Vice President Try Sutrisno closed yesterday the
\nfifth national congress of the Indonesian Council of Ulemas
\n(MUI), calling on the Moslem leaders to maintain their
\n\"reputation as role models\".<\/p>\n
\"Ulemas should keep their image as role models for the
\ncommunity, so that they would be able to shape and guide the
\nIndonesian Moslem community,\" he told some 300 participants of
\nthe congress.<\/p>\n
\"Ulemas should also help their congregation build confidence
\nand independence, and instill in them strong will and motivation
\nto improve their lives and free themselves from the shackles of
\npoverty,\" Try said.<\/p>\n
The congress, opened last Friday by President Soeharto, re-
\nelected Moslem scholar Hasan Basri for a third consecutive five-
\nyear term as chairman of the influential body.<\/p>\n
The ulemas called on the government to take firm action
\nagainst people found guilty of speaking against Prophet Muhammad
\nand the Holy Koran, and who insult the Moslem community.<\/p>\n
In his report yesterday, Hasan told Try that the ulemas also
\ncalled on all parties not to \"misuse Islamic expressions, in
\norder to prevent confusion about their real meanings\".<\/p>\n
Hasan did not elaborate on what he meant by \"misuse\", but last
\nyear some ulemas protested the use by non-Moslem people of the
\nIslamic expressions Insya Allah (God willing) or Alhamdulillah
\n(praise Allah).<\/p>\n
Hasan said the ulemas are supporting the government's effort
\nfor a clean administration by fighting all forms of corruption,
\ncollusion and manipulation.<\/p>\n
\"We are calling on all parties to implement business ethics
\nwhich are based on religious teachings and (state ideology)
\nPancasila,\" he said. (swe)<\/p>",
