'Keep unskilled workers out by developing regions'<\/p>\n
The Jakarta administration is planning to launch raids against
\nunskilled migrants hoping to find jobs in the capital. The policy
\nhas provoked criticism from experts who argue that it violates
\npeople's right of free movement. The Jakarta Post interviewed
\nsome residents about the issue.<\/p>\n
Edwina Zuldiany Gobel, 21, works for telecommunications firm
\nPT Excelcomindo Pratama in Mega Kuningan, South Jakarta. She
\nlives in Jatiwaringin Asri, Bekasi.<\/p>\n
I think the city administration is doing the right thing. Of
\ncourse, we all pity them but what is there to do. It's better
\nthan they living on the streets and becoming involved in crime.<\/p>\n
But I guess it's really comes down do what they are doing here
\nin the first place. If they are really serious about getting a
\njob, then they will of course have prepared themselves with some
\ntraining first.<\/p>\n
Right now, the raids and forced evictions may be the best policy,
\nbut in the future the government should employ preventive
\nmeasures.<\/p>\n
Doesn't the government have a training agency run by the Ministry
\nof Manpower and Transmigration? I think they should also organize
\nsomething similar in the regions, focusing on how they can
\nimprove economic development there.<\/p>\n

The high number of unskilled migrants arriving in Jakarta
\nlooking for work will not will further increase the population of
\nthe capital, but will also have the potential to increase the
\nunemployment and crime rates.<\/p>\n
Raids may be the administration's cure for this problem, but
\nthe government really should find more effective methods of
\nprevention, such as maximizing the benefits of regional autonomy,
\nso that all parts of the country become attractive places for
\ndoing business.<\/p>\n
This, of course, means that the government must provide equal
\nopportunities in education, health, public services and economic
\ndevelopment in all regions.<\/p>\n
Only then will the number of new migrants to Jakarta decrease,
\nnot because they are forcefully evicted, but because their home
\nregions can adequately provide for their rights as citizens.<\/p>\n
