Keep traditional architecture<\/p>\n
I read with interest your article in The Jakarta Post, March
\n18, 1995. Regard for our language.<\/p>\n
I am an English speaking expatriate architect and find it hard
\nto believe the reverse parochialism shown in Indonesia. Not only
\ndo most real estate developers name their developments using
\nEnglish names, they construct European-style buildings totally
\ninappropriate for a tropical climate.<\/p>\n
Why do they do this? Indonesia, like the rest of Asia has a
\nvery rich architectural tradition suited to the climate and to
\nthe building materials available. What is the desire to emulate
\nall things Western. Do most Indonesians really believe that all
\nthings Western are so fantastic that they represent prestige?
\n(Just try western fast food. Need I say more).<\/p>\n
As an architect I have seen traditional buildings that have
\nexited and moved me. I have yet to see a European-inspired real
\nestate development that is even worth a second look.<\/p>\n
Indonesia is different, please try not only to keep that
\ndifference but use it, preserve it and be proud of it, borrow
\nfrom the West but be selective.<\/p>\n
Those people and organizations trying to maintain the position
\nof the Indonesian language in this society deserve to be
\ncongratulated. Respect of one's own culture will further mutual
\nrespect between different cultures.<\/p>\n
