Kebon Manggis residents resume attack on hotel<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Hundreds of angry residents of Kebon Manggis
\nsubdistrict in Matraman district, East Jakarta, threw Molotov
\ncocktails, rocks and bottles at Hotel Mega Matra on Jl. Matraman
\nRaya on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n
There were no reports of fatalities during the day.<\/p>\n
The residents launched the attack, according to police
\nsources, because they were disappointed with the failure of the
\npolice in handling the recent murder case of Jerry Malaiholo a
\nresident of Berlan, Kebon Manggis.<\/p>\n
Jerry was allegedly fatally assaulted by security personnel of
\nthe hotel late last month after the victim was suspected of
\nextorting money from hotel guests.<\/p>\n
Berlan residents were seen openly throwing Molotov cocktails
\nin the vicinity of the hotel, while a few police officers watched
\nthe scene from a distance.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, two trucks carrying mobile brigade (Brimob) police
\nofficers heading towards the Berlan area were blocked by hundreds
\nof explosive-throwing students grouped in City Forum (Forkot),
\nwho were protesting on Jl. Diponegoro in Salemba, Central
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
A Brimob officer, identified only as Wahyudin, was hit by a
\nrock thrown by one of the students, and was immediately rushed to
\nnearby Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital.<\/p>\n
Part of a police truck was reportedly burned when a Molotov
\ncocktail struck it, forcing Brimob officers to jump out.<\/p>\n
After firing tear gas, Brimob police tried to secure the
\nDiponegoro area.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, residents of the nearby Pal Meriam subdistrict
\njoined residents of Kebon Manggis in throwing Molotov cocktails.<\/p>\n
Residents of Kebon Manggis and Pal Meriam have a long-standing
\nhistory of intercommunity conflict. Attempts have been taken by
\nMatraman district officials to make them bury the hatchet. They
\nhave also erected a high fence along a road separating the
\nneighborhoods in a bid to quell the feuding. (ylt)<\/p>",
