Keating discusses APEC preparations with Soeharto<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating yesterday
\nhad a telephone conversation with President Soeharto about the
\npreparations for the upcoming meeting of the Asia-Pacific
\nEconomic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Bogor in November.<\/p>\n
Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono told reporters yesterday
\nthat the two leaders exchanged ideas on the substance of what
\nthey expected to happen at the Bogor meeting.<\/p>\n
\"This reflects the strong commitment of the two leaders that
\nthe meeting will be fruitful for the future of the Asia-Pacific
\ncountries,\" Moerdiono said.<\/p>\n
He added that he believed other APEC leaders have similar
\nexpectations about the meeting in Bogor, scheduled for Nov. 15.<\/p>\n
President Soeharto, as the chairman of the forum, this week is
\nscheduled to meet with the chairman of the APEC's Eminent Persons
\nGroup C, Fred Bergsten, who will present the group's second
\nreport.<\/p>\n
The report, drafted during a policy session in Tokyo in July,
\ncontains a blueprint for the implementation of proposals
\nintroduced during last year's inaugural APEC Leaders Meeting on
\nBlake Island, Seattle.<\/p>\n
Moerdiono said that during yesterday's 38-minute chat, Keating
\nalso inquired about Soeharto's health, to which the latter
\nresponded that he felt fine.<\/p>\n
The minister also confirmed that South African President
\nNelson Mandela will be visiting Indonesia on Friday, Sept. 2 in
\nhis capacity as leader of the African National Congress (ANC).
