        "content": "<p>Surabaya (ANTARA) - The Surabaya Regional Public Company Zoo (KBS)\nhas established a conservation partnership with iZoo Shizuoka in Japan\nfor the loan of animals to support breeding efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi stated in Surabaya on Wednesday that this\ncollaboration represents a loan of animals between KBS and the Japanese\nzoo, expected to benefit both parties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am grateful for this animal loan collaboration between Surabaya\nand Japan,\u201d said Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that Japan\u2019s interest in borrowing Komodo dragons stems\nfrom KBS\u2019s success in breeding the species.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the scheme is not an exchange but a loan with joint\nsupervision for five years, including the possibility of retrieval if\ncertain conditions affect the animals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, the Komodo dragons we have in Japan will be monitored together.\nIf during these five years any issues arise, such as illness, they can\nbe retrieved,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He described the collaboration process as involving lengthy\ndiscussions over the past decade before realisation.<\/p>\n<p>He hopes this partnership will boost public enthusiasm for KBS and\niZoo, while encouraging innovation in introducing new animal\ncollections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope this animal loan can increase public interest in Surabaya and\nShizuoka, Japan,\u201d he expressed.<\/p>\n<p>KBS Operational Director Nurika Widyasanti explained that the loaned\nKomodo dragons are the result of breeding at KBS, representing one of\nthe zoo\u2019s conservation successes.<\/p>\n<p>Nurika also stated that the loan process has undergone evaluation and\nreview by the central government to ensure conservation sustainability\nand no disruption to KBS\u2019s breeding programme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have been specific studies from the central government, so we\ncan maintain it. At the very least, the breeding process at KBS will not\nbe halted because these two Komodo dragons or pair will be sent there,\u201d\nshe said.<\/p>\n<p>iZoo Japan Director Tsuyoshi Shirawa stated that his side has\nprepared facilities for 10 years to ensure the Komodo dragons can live\nin conditions mimicking their original habitat in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>For information, this collaboration follows the MoU between the\nIndonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry and the Shizuoka\nPrefecture Government, signed on 28 March 2026.
