The demands and hopes from many circles that Kartini Binti
\nKarim, an Indonesian migrant worker spared from being stoned to
\ndeath for suspected adultery, have been fulfilled. The Council of
\nJudges of Fujairah Court, United Arab Emirates, declared Kartini
\nfree.<\/p>\n
In this context, Legal Aid Institute-Association of Women for
\nJustice (LBH-APIK) highly appreciates the Indonesian government
\nfor its noble work. LBH-APIK needs to emphasize that the Kartini
\ncase should be made a significant lesson.<\/p>\n
The institute is aware of how weak the government's protection
\nis for Indonesian migrant workers, including those who work in
\nSaudi Arabia. Improvements must be made on the procedures of
\nrecruitment, accommodation, shipment of workers and their return
\nto Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Concretely the government should do the following things:<\/p>\n
* Provide in major airports all over the country special posts,
\nin cooperation with NGOs, to supervise the departure and the
\narrival of the migrant workers. The service of the post should
\ninclude imparting information and giving guidance on how to take
\ncare of themselves right from departure to the recipient country
\nuntil their return to Indonesia.<\/p>\n
* To place an agency (together with NGOs) at every recipient
\ncountry in an effort to help migrant workers settle any problems,
\nshould they arise. The workers should be informed of the
\nexistence of such agencies.<\/p>\n
* To establish a bilateral cooperation with the recipient
\ncountries to protect the workers.<\/p>\n
* To ratify the international convention on protection for
\nmigrant workers.<\/p>\n
