Kartini binti Karim gains freedom, returns home<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian migrant worker Kartini binti Karim,
\nwho was once sentenced to be stoned to death for suspected
\nadultery, has returned home to freedom.<\/p>\n
Accompanied by a Ministry of Manpower official, Kartini flew
\nfrom Dubai and arrived here in Jakarta late on Friday night and
\nwas immediately taken to her home Karawang, West Java.<\/p>\n
She had served nine months in Fujairah State Prison.<\/p>\n
Minister of Manpower Bomer Pasaribu told The Jakarta Post on
\nSaturday that Kartini was unconditionally released by a local
\ncourt in the United Arab Emirates after an appeal hearing in
\nApril.<\/p>\n
\"Kartini has returned home. We (the government) actually did
\nnot want to expose this,\" Bomer said.<\/p>\n
\"The main point is she has returned to the country and that
\nshe is free,\" he added.<\/p>\n
The 35-year-old migrant worker was sentenced on Feb. 28 to be
\nstoned to death for committing adultery, after being arrested
\nseveral months earlier.<\/p>\n
She was accused of committing adultery with an Indian citizen,
\nMuhammad Sulaiman Fraongan, who reportedly fled the country after
\nthe incident in June last year, leaving Kartini with her five-
\nmonth son.<\/p>\n
Minister of Foreign Affairs Alwi Shihab and the Ministry of
\nManpower's Director General for Labor Placement Din Syamsuddin
\nwent to the Emirates in March to seek clemency for Kartini.<\/p>\n
Top officials in the past have remarked that if Kartini is
\nreleased she should not be welcomed as a hero as she is
\nconsidered to have committed a crime in the Emirates.<\/p>\n
According to Bomer, most of the legal process for Kartini's
\nrelease, including lawyers and interpreters, along with her
\nreturn flight, was financed by the Ministry of Manpower.<\/p>\n
\"The point is she is free and this will be a very valuable
\nexperience for all of us,\" Bomer said. (dja)<\/p>",
