Kamra members get severance pay<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA (JP): Some 300 members of the People's Security
\n(Kamra) of the Sleman regency enjoyed Rp 1 million each in
\nseverance pay on Friday, thanks to governor Sultan Hamengkubuwono
\nX's prompt help.<\/p>\n
The Kamra members, who arrived on motorcycles, stormed the
\ngubernatorial office complex in Kepatihan, demanding that the
\ngovernor help them get the severance pay as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
\"It is now Friday. If we don't get the money today, that means
\nwe will have to wait until January 2, 2001. We need the money for
\nlebaran (Idul Fitri),\" Rubiyanto, Kamra coordinator told the
\nSultan.<\/p>\n
The Kamra members also asked the Sultan to help them get new
\njobs. \"We have been informed that 17,000 Kamra members will be
\nemployed as civil servants. Therefore we want to confirm if it is
\ntrue,\" Rubiyanto inquired.<\/p>\n
\"Frankly speaking, I am not well informed about that. But, one
\nthing for sure is that the regional government of Yogyakarta
\nitself has an ample number of civil servants. Therefore, I'm
\ndoubtful whether all Kamra members could be employed as civil
\nservants,\" the Sultan said.<\/p>\n
The Sultan, therefore, suggested that all former Kamra members
\nthink about working as security guards in private offices. \"That
\nwill enable you to earn as much money (Rp 250,000 per month) as
\nyou get as Kamra members,\" the Sultan said.<\/p>\n
The Sultan, whose affection for his people is renowned,
\nreceived the Kamra members at the Bangsal Kepatihan Hall, and
\nimmediately called the Yogyakarta Police chief Brig. Gen. Logan
\nSiagian by phone conveying the Kamra members' wishes.<\/p>\n
The Kamra members dispersed peacefully after the Sultan
\nassured them that they all could receive their due salaries at
\nthe Sleman Police Precinct as promised by the Police chief.<\/p>\n
Tired of frequent protests by Kamra members, the government
\nfinally decided on Thursday to dissolve Kamra and provide each
\nmember with Rp 1 million, four times their monthly salary.<\/p>\n
Kamra members nationwide have expressed frustration over their
\nfate as their contract with the (then) Ministry of Defense and
\nSecurity expires at the end of this year.<\/p>\n
They have frequently demonstrated at the House of
\nRepresentatives (DPR), demanding that the government provide them
\nwith employment or allow them to become members of the Police
\nForce.<\/p>\n
Established in 1998, Kamra members were recruited to help the
\nmilitary, including the police, maintain security throughout the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
Kamra members were employed to serve for one year, with a
\nmaximum extension period of one year. Their period of service
