KAMMI wants Gus Dur to be impeached<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA (JP): The United Front of Indonesian Muslim
\nStudents (KAMMI) ended its second national congress on Friday
\nwith a recommendation that the People's Consultative Assembly
\n(MPR) hold a special session to ask for the President's
\naccountability.<\/p>\n
The congress, which had its official closing ceremony late
\nThursday night, also recommended that the national education
\nbudget be raised.<\/p>\n
Soon after the congress ended, the KAMMI activists took to the
\nstreets, marching from the venue of the congress at Wisma LPP
\nDemangan to the Gadjah Mada roundabout, covering a distance of
\ntwo kilometers.<\/p>\n
Waving banners and posters, the students also urged a quick
\nsettlement of the sectarian clashes in Maluku.<\/p>\n
"The rally is intended to socialize the result of the
\ncongress," said KAMMI spokesman Nur Hidayanto.<\/p>\n
KAMMI's reasoning for requesting the impeachment of President
\nAbdurrahman Wahid was that he had derailed the reform process,
\nthey said.<\/p>\n
"The vision of reform requires the establishment of a rational
\ndemocracy in the country. However, the way Gus Dur handles his
\npolitical rivals has been irrational. How then could he pioneer
\nthe establishment of rational democracy?" Nur said.<\/p>\n
The objectives of the reform movement, which were established
\nmoments before President Soeharto was ousted in 1998, included
\nsupremacy of law, regional autonomy, the establishment of
\nrational democracy, Soeharto's trial, eradication of corruption,
\ncollusion and nepotistic practices and the elimination of the
\nArmed Forces' dual function.<\/p>\n
None of the objectives has been accomplished by Gus Dur's
\nadministration, Nur claimed.<\/p>\n
The congress, attended by some 250 KAMMI members, elected Andi
\nRahmat, a student of the University of Indonesia in Jakarta, as
\nthe new chairman.<\/p>\n
Rahmat, formerly a staff member of the Strategic Study
\nDivision of KAMMI's central executive board, replaced Fitra Arsil
\nto chair the organization for the 2000-2002 term.<\/p>\n
The next KAMMI congress is scheduled to be held in Lampung in
