Kalla refuses compensation<\/p>\n

Shipping company PT. Kalla Lines and Yogyakarta fishermen have
\nfailed to reach a compensation agreement for environmental damage
\nallegedly caused by the sinking of a company tanker off Congot
\nbeach, Yogyakarta province last year.<\/p>\n
\"Based on our study as well as satellite photography, there
\nhas been no significant damage in the water caused by our
\nsubmerged tanker,\" Kalla Lines operations director Ramadhan said
\nduring negotiations at the Yogyakarta branch of the Regional
\nEnvironmental Impact Management (Bapedalda).<\/p>\n
Ten fishermen representing hundreds of their colleagues from
\nKulonprogo, Bantul, and Gunung Kidul attended Thursday's meeting,
\nwhich was chaired by Bapedalda representative Tirun Marwoto.<\/p>\n
The tanker, KMT. Bumi Sarana, containing 1,500 tons of asphalt
\nsank last July in Congot beach, Kulonprogo, some 50 kilometers
\nsouthwest of Yogyakarta.<\/p>\n
Sumaryo, a fisherman from Kulon Progo regency, said that the
\nsinking of the tanker had caused a significant drop in daily
\ncatch figures, with income dropping from Rp 400,000 to Rp 100,000
\nper boat per day.<\/p>\n
\"The tanker sank right where most of the fish live, causing
\nthem to move away,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Sumaryo and his friends demanded PT. Kalla Lines pay
\ncompensation totaling Rp 14.5 billion.<\/p>\n
\"The remains of the tanker has frequently caused
\ndamage to our casting nets as it is only 50 meters from the
\nwater's surface,\" Sumantoyo, another fisherman from Bantul
\nregency said.<\/p>\n
Teguh Purnomo from non-governmental organization Indonesian
\nEnvironmental Forum said that PT. Kalla Lines, under the umbrella
\nof its holding company Kalla Group, should remove the tanker as
\nit could damage the area's ecosystem.<\/p>\n
Despite the deadlock, however, they agreed to form a small
\nteam comprising four fishermen, a representative of the
\nAssociation of Indonesian Fishermen, and an environmental
\nobserver.<\/p>\n
\"We will arrange negotiations between the team and
\ndirectors of PT. Kalla Lines,\" Ali Abbas from Kalla Group said.<\/p>",
