Kalla blames corruption for poverty<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Coordinating Minister for Social Welfare Jusuf Kalla
\nsaid on Saturday corruption had robbed Indonesia of its
\nprosperity.<\/p>\n
Corruption, he said, had earned the country the status as one
\nof the poorest in Asia.<\/p>\n
"In the 1950s, Indonesia was as prosperous as other Asian
\ncountries such as Japan and South Korea. But today, Indonesia
\nlags far behind those countries," he said.<\/p>\n
Kalla compared Indonesia's current per capita income of
\nUS$1,000 with Japan's $35,000, South Korea's $10,000 and
\nMalaysia's $3,500.<\/p>\n
"Our country started its development at almost the same time
\nas them. But, we are still lagging behind. There is something
\nwrong with us," he said.<\/p>\n
"Corruption has destroyed the nation's mental fiber as well as
\nthe country's economic pillars."<\/p>\n
Kalla is contesting the convention held by Golkar Party to
