        "content": "<p>Kalimantan Fires: Indonesian Military Leads Ecosystem Restoration<\/p>\n<p>Reporter<\/p>\n<p>August 31, 2026 | 07:58 am<\/p>\n<p>TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia\u2019s VI\/Mulawarman Regional Military\nCommand and other agencies have begun restoring ecosystems and\noptimizing water sources to rehabilitate areas affected by forest and\nland fires in East and North Kalimantan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis month, we are restoring vegetation by planting trees in burned\nand degraded areas, including along riverbanks,\u201d VI\/Mulawarman Regional\nMilitary Commander Major General Krido Pramono said.<\/p>\n<p>Restoring vegetation was essential to restoring the ecological\nfunctions of areas that have lost tree cover because of forest and land\nfires, he said here on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Tree planting will be carried out gradually with the involvement of\nthe military, police, Regional Agency for Disaster Countermeasures,\nsearch and rescue agency, religious leaders and communities.<\/p>\n<p>Such cooperation is needed not only during disasters but also to\nprotect the environment and reduce the risk of fires returning during\nthe dry season.<\/p>\n<p>Besides reforestation, the government and relevant agencies are\noptimizing existing water infrastructure to improve water\navailability.<\/p>\n<p>Reservoirs that had previously been built are being reactivated to\nprovide water amid low rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrilled wells that we have built also provide clean water and can\nsupport forest and land fire prevention and firefighting,\u201d Krido\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>He said water availability was increasingly critical amid dry\nconditions and rising temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>Water is needed not only for communities but also to support\nfirefighting operations if hotspots re-emerge.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities are also taking a spiritual approach, holding joint\nprayers and salat istisqa, or prayers for rain, simultaneously in parts\nof East and North Kalimantan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recognize our limitations and weaknesses.
