Kalijodo gangs sign peace deal<\/p>\n
The leaders of two warring gangs in the Kalijodo brothel and
\ngambling complex in Penjaringan district, North Jakarta, signed
\nan agreement on Wednesday to end their long-standing feud.<\/p>\n
The two gangs from South Sulawesi's Mandar and Makassar ethnic
\ngroups have been battling to collect protection money from
\nbrothels and gambling operators in the complex. Their practices
\nwere backed up by corrupt police and military officers.<\/p>\n
The leader of the Mandar gang, Yusman Nur, and the Makassar
\ngang leader, Abdul Azis, signed the agreement at the Penjaringan
\nPolice station.<\/p>\n
North Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Andi Chaerudin witnessed
\nthe signing of the deal, which was marked by the handing over of
\nabout 300 sharp weapons.<\/p>\n
A third gang in Kalijodo, this one made up of members of the
\nBanten ethnic group, was not involved in the clash between the
\nMandar and Makassar gangs earlier this year which resulted in the
\ndeath of a thug and the destruction of numerous brothels.<\/p>\n
\"The agreement was reached after both parties agreed to end
\ntheir dispute,\" said the chairman of the South Sulawesi Community
\nSocial Foundation, Ihsan Rauf Praja.<\/p>\n
Both Azis and Yusman declined to comment, only saying that all
\nmatters were being handled by the foundation.<\/p>\n
Governor Sutiyoso had planned to close the complex in
\nFebruary, but the brothels and gambling dens are still operating.
