        "content": "<p>Kalianda resort to be green: Nirwan<\/p>\n<p>KALIANDA, Lampung (JP): The management of a planned 350-<br>\nhectare integrated beach resort says it will use environmentally<br>\nsound practices as it builds the resort.<\/p>\n<p>PT Krakatau Lampung Tourism Development Corporation's vice<br>\nchairman and principal shareholder, Nirwan Dermawan Bakrie, said<br>\nSaturday that although he did not know the details of the<br>\ncompleted compulsory environmental impact study, he was sure the<br>\nresort project, Kalianda, conformed with national environmental<br>\nstandards because the government gave the project the go-ahead.<\/p>\n<p>He was responding to concerns that the project, which was<br>\naimed at boosting Lampung's revenue from tourism, could damage<br>\nthe environment.<\/p>\n<p>A government source, who asked for anonymity, said coral-<br>\ncovered footpaths would lead to environmental destruction.<\/p>\n<p>\"Coral from damaged reefs may be taken, but there is no<br>\nguarantee what the next developer will do,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Oceanology Center of Research and Development under the<br>\nNational Institute of Sciences, estimates that only seven percent<br>\nof Indonesia's coral reefs are in pristine condition.<\/p>\n<p>Most coral reefs in West Indonesian waters are in critical<br>\ncondition.<\/p>\n<p>The development corporation will help build infrastructure for<br>\nthe resort project, estimated to cost over Rp 100 billion.<\/p>\n<p>About 195 hectares will be set aside for interested hoteliers<br>\nand other parties, while a zoned residential area will be divided<br>\nup into plots ranging from 750 to 2,000 square meters.<\/p>\n<p>Nirwan's message in a promotional brochure said: \"We will do<br>\nour best to be sensitive to the ecology, heritage and aesthetics<br>\nof the site.\"<\/p>\n<p>South Lampung is the home province of Nirwan's family. Bakrie<br>\nGroup owns 90 percent of shares in the corporation while 10<br>\npercent is owned by the provincial government.<\/p>\n<p>International hotels, golf courses and resorts will be built<br>\nat the integrated resort area.<\/p>\n<p>At the soft opening ceremony of Kalianda, Governor Poedjono<br>\nPranyoto, also the president commissioner of the corporation,<br>\nsaid the project was environmentally sound.<\/p>\n<p>The corporation is backed by Daedalus Development, a Hong<br>\nKong-based consultancy in integrated resort development. Daedalus<br>\nis also developing a similar resort in Lombok.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications<br>\nJoop Ave said the project should do everything possible to raise<br>\nlocal people's welfare.<\/p>\n<p>The governor had said Kalianda was one of Lampung's areas<br>\nwhich was prioritized for development.<\/p>\n<p>Nirwan's brother, noted businessman Aburizal Bakrie, said<br>\nplans to enable large ships to anchor in Kalianda Bay would also<br>\nbe designed with care.<\/p>\n<p>\"We will find ways to make it safe for the environment,\"<br>\nAburizal said.
