Kalianda resort to be green: Nirwan<\/p>\n
KALIANDA, Lampung (JP): The management of a planned 350-
\nhectare integrated beach resort says it will use environmentally
\nsound practices as it builds the resort.<\/p>\n
PT Krakatau Lampung Tourism Development Corporation's vice
\nchairman and principal shareholder, Nirwan Dermawan Bakrie, said
\nSaturday that although he did not know the details of the
\ncompleted compulsory environmental impact study, he was sure the
\nresort project, Kalianda, conformed with national environmental
\nstandards because the government gave the project the go-ahead.<\/p>\n
He was responding to concerns that the project, which was
\naimed at boosting Lampung's revenue from tourism, could damage
\nthe environment.<\/p>\n
A government source, who asked for anonymity, said coral-
\ncovered footpaths would lead to environmental destruction.<\/p>\n
\"Coral from damaged reefs may be taken, but there is no
\nguarantee what the next developer will do,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The Oceanology Center of Research and Development under the
\nNational Institute of Sciences, estimates that only seven percent
\nof Indonesia's coral reefs are in pristine condition.<\/p>\n
Most coral reefs in West Indonesian waters are in critical
\ncondition.<\/p>\n
The development corporation will help build infrastructure for
\nthe resort project, estimated to cost over Rp 100 billion.<\/p>\n
About 195 hectares will be set aside for interested hoteliers
\nand other parties, while a zoned residential area will be divided
\nup into plots ranging from 750 to 2,000 square meters.<\/p>\n
Nirwan's message in a promotional brochure said: \"We will do
\nour best to be sensitive to the ecology, heritage and aesthetics
\nof the site.\"<\/p>\n
South Lampung is the home province of Nirwan's family. Bakrie
\nGroup owns 90 percent of shares in the corporation while 10
\npercent is owned by the provincial government.<\/p>\n
International hotels, golf courses and resorts will be built
\nat the integrated resort area.<\/p>\n
At the soft opening ceremony of Kalianda, Governor Poedjono
\nPranyoto, also the president commissioner of the corporation,
\nsaid the project was environmentally sound.<\/p>\n
The corporation is backed by Daedalus Development, a Hong
\nKong-based consultancy in integrated resort development. Daedalus
\nis also developing a similar resort in Lombok.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications
\nJoop Ave said the project should do everything possible to raise
\nlocal people's welfare.<\/p>\n
The governor had said Kalianda was one of Lampung's areas
\nwhich was prioritized for development.<\/p>\n
Nirwan's brother, noted businessman Aburizal Bakrie, said
\nplans to enable large ships to anchor in Kalianda Bay would also
\nbe designed with care.<\/p>\n
\"We will find ways to make it safe for the environment,\"
