Kaimoeddin rejected as acting governor<\/p>\n
KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: The legislature (DPRD) in
\nSoutheast Sulawesi has expressed opposition to government plans
\nto appoint La Ode Kaimoeddin as acting governor after the
\ngovernor and vice governor were accused of money politics.<\/p>\n
Deputy DPRD speaker Andrey Djufri said on Wednesday the
\ncaretaker should be someone from the home affairs ministry
\noffice.<\/p>\n
Southeast Sulawesi had elected Ali Mazi and running mate
\nYusran Silondae as governor and deputy governor respectively for
\nthe 2002-2007 period, but their inaugurations, originally
\nscheduled for Dec. 23, were delayed indefinitely to give
\nauthorities enough time to probe allegations of money politics.<\/p>\n
Kaimoeddin, the incumbent Southeast Sulawesi governor, said
\nearlier that Home Affairs Minister Hari Sabarno had appointed him

Buleleng prone to landslides<\/p>\n
DENPASAR, Bali: Some locations in the hilly area of Buleleng
\nregency in Bali are prone to landslides, therefore residents
\nshould be alert, the local regent says.<\/p>\n
Buleleng Regent Putu Bagiada said on Wednesday that potential
\nlandslides did not only occur in the area of Pancasari and
\nGitgit, but also Banjar and Tejakula.<\/p>\n
Besides unstable land, most of the forest in the area was
\ngone.<\/p>\n
Deforestation has been on the rise since the reform era, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The regent said last year's floods and mudslides had claimed
\nat least four lives and damaged dozens of houses in Tejakula.<\/p>\n
Putu Bagiada warned people of possible floods, urging them to
\nstay alert. He said the public administration had assigned some

PWI mulls sanction for member<\/p>\n
BATAM, Riau: The Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) has
\npledged to punish its member identified as MWD, 51, for his
\nalleged involvement in the smuggling of eight luxury cars.<\/p>\n
\"If his involvement (in the smuggling) is proven, we will
\nimpose a penalty,\" said Batam PWI chairman Socrates on the
\nsidelines of a PWI meeting here on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n
The meeting was convened especially to discuss the alleged
\ninvolvement of MWD in the smuggling.<\/p>\n
MWD was accused of manipulating export-import documents issued
\nby the Trade and Industry Office in Batam. However, MWD denied
\nany wrongdoing, saying that the actor was a man identified as UJ.<\/p>\n
The smuggling case was disclosed when police discovered that
\nthe cars, imported from Singapore via Batu Ampar Port, would be
\nused for taxis.<\/p>\n
Since April, 2002 the Batam mayoralty has banned the
\nimportation of used cars in order to reduce traffic congestion.

Children suffer from damaged schools<\/p>\n
BANDUNG, West Java: About 75 percent of elementary school
\nstudents in Garut regency, West Java, can not have effective
\neducation due to damaged school buildings.<\/p>\n
Head of the education office Dardjo Sukardja said he hoped the
\nrehabilitation funds from the national education ministry could
\nbe spent on renovating 24 school buildings.<\/p>\n
Dardjo said he planned to seek funds from the provincial
\nadministration.<\/p>\n
At present, there are 268,706 elementary school pupils
\nstudying at 1,526 schools in Garut.<\/p>\n
About 75 percent of them or 210,530 students could not attend
\nregular classes because 1,145 buildings were severely damaged.<\/p>\n
Local councillors Barman Cahyana and Wan Gunawan expressed
