        "content": "<p>Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) continues to\nstrengthen the role of rail-based freight services in supporting the\nnational supply chain. The supply chain is the series of processes\nenabling goods to travel from producers to distribution points and end\nusers. One of the key commodities served by KAI is cement and clinker.\nClinker is a semi-finished material that serves as the main ingredient\nin cement production. This commodity plays a vital role in\ninfrastructure development, housing, public facilities, industrial\nestates, and various community construction needs. Throughout January to\nJune, or the first semester of 2026, KAI transported 1,170,912 tonnes of\ncement and clinker. For an annual comparison, KAI\u2019s cement and clinker\nservices reached 2,851,615 tonnes throughout 2025. KAI Vice President of\nCorporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated that cement and clinker\nservices are a crucial part of KAI\u2019s contribution to supporting smooth\ndevelopment across various regions. \u201cEvery tonne of cement and clinker\nmoving by train has meaning for the development supply chain. From\nfactories to distribution points, this service helps maintain a more\nplanned and stable material supply, benefiting both the business world\nand the community,\u201d Anne said. Anne explained that trains possess strong\ncharacteristics for transporting large-volume goods over medium to long\ndistances. In a single train set, a large quantity of cargo can be\ncarried with a more measurable travel schedule. This helps the\ndistribution of cement and clinker run more efficiently, especially for\nindustrial and development needs requiring supply certainty. \u201cFor\ncorporate customers, schedule certainty and large capacity help the\ndistribution process run better. For the community, a smooth supply\nchain can support the availability of construction materials, maintain\nregional economic activity, and help businesses manage distribution\ncosts,\u201d Anne stated. The role of rail freight is increasingly relevant\nas logistics costs remain a major challenge for Indonesia\u2019s\ncompetitiveness. Logistics costs are all costs incurred in the process\nof moving, storing, and distributing goods until they reach their\ndestination. In the 2025\u20132029 National Medium-Term Development Plan\n(RPJMN), Indonesia\u2019s logistics costs were recorded at 14.29% of Gross\nDomestic Product (GDP) using 2022 as the base year. Gross Domestic\nProduct (GDP) is the value of all goods and services produced by a\ncountry in a specific period. The 2025\u20132029 RPJMN targets a reduction in\nIndonesia\u2019s logistics costs to 13.52% and then 12.50% of GDP. Using\nIndonesia\u2019s 2025 GDP at current prices of IDR 23,821.1 trillion based on\ndata from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), reducing the logistics cost ratio\nfrom 14.29% to 12.50% of GDP equates to a potential efficiency gain of\napproximately IDR 426.40 trillion per year. This figure illustrates the\npotential efficiency of the national logistics system. The more\nefficient the distribution costs, the greater the economic space that\ncan be utilised to strengthen industry, maintain supply fluidity,\nsupport regional development, and benefit the community. \u201cLogistics\ntouches many things. It involves production costs, material prices,\ndevelopment smoothness, employment, and people\u2019s purchasing power.\nTherefore, strengthening rail-based freight services is important so\nthat distribution becomes more efficient, scheduled, and adds value to\nthe national economy,\u201d Anne said. From a global perspective, the\nInternational Energy Agency (IEA) notes that railways serve about 6% of\nworld freight transport based on tonne-kilometres but account for about\n1% of transport emissions. A tonne-kilometre is a unit of freight\ntransport measurement; for example, 1 tonne of goods shipped over 1\nkilometre is counted as 1 tonne-kilometre. From a sustainability\nstandpoint, shifting logistics from road to rail also has the potential\nto reduce emissions. Emissions are exhaust gases released into the air.\nCO\u2082, or carbon dioxide, is one of the main gases contributing to climate\nchange. CO\u2082e, or carbon dioxide equivalent, is a measure used to\ncalculate the impact of various types of greenhouse gases in a single\nunified unit. Referring to international references in the freight rail\nsector, shipping goods by train can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by\nup to approximately 75% compared to trucks for the same volume of goods.\nUsing an estimation approach, KAI\u2019s cement and clinker volume in the\nfirst semester of 2026 of 1,170,912 tonnes is equivalent to 117,091,200\ntonne-kilometres for each 100-kilometre distance scenario. If using a\nglobal road emission comparison assumption of around 62 grams of CO\u2082e\nper tonne-kilometre, then using rail for this volume potentially avoids\nemissions of around 5,444 tonnes of CO\u2082e for every 100 kilometres of\nshipment. This figure is a scenario estimate based on international\nreferences and may change depending on actual distance, operational\npatterns, type of facilities, load factors, track conditions, and the\nemission calculation method used. Anne stated that the benefits of\nrail-based freight services do not stop at cost efficiency. This service\ncan also help organise logistics traffic, reduce the pressure of heavy\nvehicles on roads, support travel safety, and strengthen the company\u2019s\nsustainability agenda. \u201cWhen goods can be shipped in large volumes, more\nscheduled, and with greater energy efficiency, businesses have better\nroom to manage costs. In the long term, efficient logistics can help\nindustrial competitiveness and support more stable goods prices for the\ncommunity,\u201d Anne said. KAI continues to optimise freight services\nthrough improved operational patterns, reliability of facilities and\ninfrastructure, cooperation with corporate customers, and strengthening\nlogistics services with partners.
