PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), or KAI, is studying the\nstrengthening of freight transport connectivity to and from the Batang\nIntegrated Industrial Estate (KITB)\/Industropolis Batang in Central\nJava. The move is part of developing an increasingly integrated\nlogistics ecosystem on Java.<\/p>\n
The connectivity development discussions involve PT KAI, PT Pelabuhan\nIndonesia (Persero), PT Sarana Pembangunan Jawa Tengah (Perseroda) or\nSPJT, and the Regional Public Company Aneka Usaha of Batang Regency, or\nPerumda Aneka Usaha Batang. Also involved is PT Kawasan Industri Terpadu\nBatang, or KITB\/Industropolis Batang, as the estate manager.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe study is directed at the connectivity of the industrial estate\nwith dry ports, seaports, railway networks, warehousing, trucking, and\nmajor ports,\u201d said KAI Vice President Corporate Communication Anne Purba\nin a written statement in Jakarta on Tuesday (25\/8\/2026).<\/p>\n
Anne said logistics infrastructure plays a strategic role in\ndetermining the smooth flow of goods from industrial estates to domestic\nand international markets. She explained that industrial estates require\nlogistics networks capable of efficiently connecting production centres\nwith distribution centres and ports.<\/p>\n
\u201cKAI sees that railways have significant room to strengthen these\nnetworks, especially for the movement of goods in large volumes and over\nincreasingly long distances,\u201d Anne said.<\/p>\n
According to Anne, this role is supported by the scale of KAI\u2019s\nfreight services. From January to July 2026, KAI transported 38,648,919\ntonnes of goods. Of this, 31,661,769 tonnes were coal, while 6,987,150\ntonnes came from non-coal commodities such as containers, cement, fuel,\nplantation commodities, retail goods, and other commodities.<\/p>\n
Anne said the experience of managing large-volume goods movement is\nan important asset in assessing the potential of new industrial estates.\nThe growth of production activity at KITB could open new goods flows if\nconnected to terminals, ports, and distribution networks suited to the\ncharacteristics of each commodity.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the initial discussions, connectivity to Tanjung Priok in\nJakarta, Tanjung Perak\/Kalimas in Surabaya, and Patimban are among the\ndirections to be explored further,\u201d Anne said.<\/p>\n
She said Tanjung Priok could strengthen access for goods from KITB to\ninternational trade networks, while connectivity to Tanjung\nPerak\/Kalimas opens access to distribution and shipping networks through\nthe eastern part of Java. Patimban is also included as an alternative\nnetwork to be analysed based on origin-destination and the needs of KITB\ntenants.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe use of railways will be determined based on distance, volume,\ncommodity type, delivery frequency, travel time, handling processes, and\nthe overall efficiency of the logistics chain,\u201d Anne said.<\/p>\n
She explained that routes with distances of around 150-200 kilometres\nand above are among the ranges to be explored further.
