PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has commenced the operation of 391 \u2018New\nGeneration\u2019 stainless steel carriages as part of a passenger rolling\nstock modernisation programme targeted for completion by 2027. The\nprocurement programme represents a total investment of Rp5.505\ntrillion.<\/p>\n
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated\nthat to date, 39 trainsets\u2014comprising 391 stainless steel New Generation\ncarriages produced by PT INKA (Persero)\u2014have been handed over and are\ncurrently serving various long-distance rail routes. \u201cThe procurement\nprogramme for 612 New Generation carriages is KAI\u2019s long-term investment\nto gradually renew passenger facilities. Every operating trainset brings\na higher standard of comfort and is part of our ongoing service\ndevelopment,\u201d Anne said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The modernisation programme began in 2023, with a total procurement\ngoal of 612 stainless steel New Generation units to be finalised by\n2027. This total includes 297 executive class carriages, 199 economy\nclass carriages, 57 dining cars, 57 power cars, and two baggage\ncars.<\/p>\n
According to Anne, the procurement of these new-generation trains is\nintended to enhance service quality and meet passenger demand for more\ncomfortable and modern travel. The New Generation stainless steel sets\nare equipped with several new facilities, including ergonomic seats,\nseats that recline up to 135 degrees, increased legroom, folding tables,\npower sockets, and USB ports at every seat, as well as automatic sliding\ndoors.<\/p>\n
For certain services, KAI has also introduced additional amenities\nsuch as a Passenger Information Display System (PIDS), toilets equipped\nwith foot washers, prayer rooms (musala), baby changing tables, and\nblankets for certain overnight journeys. Anne explained that KAI\ncontinues to refine the New Generation sets based on customer feedback\nand operational evaluations. \u201cDuring the delivery and operation process\nof the New Generation sets, we have received significant input from both\ncustomers and operational staff. This feedback serves as material for\njoint evaluation so that improvements can be implemented in subsequent\ntrainsets,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n
Currently, the New Generation stainless steel sets are utilised\nacross various long-distance services, including executive, mixed\nexecutive-economy, and economy classes. For executive services, the new\ncarriages are operational on flagship trains such as KA Argo Dwipangga,\nArgo Lawu, Argo Anggrek, Argo Semeru, Bima, Taksaka, Gajayana, and\nParahyangan. For mixed executive-economy services, they are used on\nroutes including KA Lodaya, Mataram, Bogowonto, Batavia, Gumarang,\nJayabaya, Bangunkarta, and Singasari. For economy class, the New\nGeneration sets are currently operating on KA Jaka Tingkir, Progo, and\nMajapahit.<\/p>\n
Anne added that the increasing number of carriages received from PT\nINKA will expand the use of New Generation sets across various rail\nroutes until the programme concludes in 2027. \u201cKAI continues to\nundertake sustainable facility development.
