Indonesia's state-owned railway company KAI has fully adopted B40 biodiesel for its locomotives and generators, aligning with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources' push to expand renewable energy in transportation and reduce emissions. KAI is preparing for the upcoming B50 biodiesel mandate by conducting technical trials to ensure safety, while highlighting the role of rail services in providing economical mobility and sustainable logistics, including a significant increase in passenger numbers and coal transport in early 2026. This initiative supports national goals for energy independence and the 2060 net zero emissions target, enhancing the environmental sustainability of Indonesia's rail network.

“All locomotives and generators operated by KAI use renewable energy
through B40 biodiesel,” KAI Vice President of Corporate Communications
Anne Purba said on Sunday.

She said the use of B40 reflects KAI’s support for the Ministry of
Energy and Mineral Resources’ strategic initiative to expand renewable
energy in the transportation sector.

With the adoption of renewable energy, train operations produce lower
emissions and strengthen railways as a more environmentally friendly
logistics and transportation solution.

“We understand that efficiency and affordable travel costs are
crucial for the public. Amid increasingly limited fuel supplies, trains
offer a mobility solution that remains economical and reliable,” she
said.

Purba also expressed KAI’s readiness to support the ministry’s next
phase in developing B50 biodiesel.

The government’s push to increase the use of biofuels (BBN) is part
of a broader strategy to achieve national energy independence and meet
the 2060 net zero emissions (NZE) target.

She emphasized that safety remains a top priority, adding that all
locomotives and generators that will use B50 will undergo a series of
technical trials before being deployed for operations.

Purba highlighted that the growing adoption of renewable energy is
making rail transport more environmentally sustainable, contributing to
a healthier environment for future generations.

In the first quarter of 2026, KAI recorded 14,515,350 passengers on
long-distance and local train services, marking an 18.4 percent increase
compared to 12,261,632 passengers in the same period last year.

Beyond passenger services, railways also play a vital role in
logistics. In the first quarter of 2026, KAI transported 12,075,002
tonnes of coal for electricity supply in Java and Bali, along with
2,873,440 tonnes of other goods, including containers, agricultural
products, and retail shipments.

Purba noted that these logistics operations are now supported by
trains powered by more environmentally friendly B40 biodiesel.

She added that collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral
Resources in adopting renewable energy is a strategic step toward
strengthening national energy independence.

“We remain committed to advancing railways as a safe, efficient, and
sustainable mode of transportation for the nation’s future,” she
said.

Related news: Indonesia to maintain B40 biodiesel policy this year:
Minister

Related news: Indonesia to roll out B50 biodiesel from July 1:
Lahadalia

Translator: Muhammad Harianto, Resinta Sulistiyandari
",
