PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) recorded 21 reports of suspected sexual harassment in the first quarter of 2026, with 18 incidents on commuter rail (KRL) services and three on long-distance trains, a figure that remains low compared to the annual average of around 50 cases since 2020. Despite the relatively small numbers against millions of customer feedbacks, KAI treats each report seriously, implementing measures such as CCTV analytics, blacklisting offenders, and a revamped ticketing system allowing women to select seating near other women. The company urges passengers not to fear using rail transport and to report incidents promptly to foster safer public transportation.

JAKARTA — PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has recorded 21 reports of
suspected sexual harassment during the period from January to March
2026. The majority of the reports occurred on commuter rail (KRL)
journeys, while others took place on long-distance trains.

Although the number is considered small compared to the total
customer feedback, KAI emphasises that every report is handled
seriously.

Vice President of Corporate Communication at PT KAI, Anne Purba,
stated that throughout the first quarter of 2026, KAI received 18
reports of suspected sexual harassment on KRL and three reports on
long-distance trains.

Based on KAI’s data from 2020 to 2025, there has been an average of
around 50 reports of suspected sexual harassment each year. This figure
combines incidents on both KRL and long-distance trains.

Anne explained that the majority of reports received involve
suspected physical sexual harassment. However, this number is considered
relatively small compared to the total customer suggestions, criticisms,
and feedback received by KAI each year.

In a year, KAI receives around 2 to 3 million suggestions,
criticisms, and feedback from customers.

“Out of 2 to 3 million, there are about 50 reports of sexual
harassment. From a percentage perspective, it’s small, but we take even
one case of harassment seriously,” Anne clarified.

As follow-up actions, KAI focuses on protecting victims and
preventing perpetrators. Efforts include operating CCTV analytics and
implementing a blacklist for sexual harassment offenders.

Additionally, KAI has introduced a revamped ticketing feature that
allows female passengers to choose seats near other women through KTP ID
identification.

Although sexual harassment cases are still recorded, Anne urges the
public not to hesitate to use rail transport. She also encourages
victims or witnesses to report incidents immediately.

“Don’t be afraid to take the train. We must be safe on public
transport,” Anne said.

“Report any incident that makes us uncomfortable, so we can realise
safe transportation,” she added.
",
