Kadin wants to see collusion stop<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry
\n(Kadin) has urged entrepreneurs to put an end to collusion with
\ngovernment officials and to nurture business ethics.<\/p>\n
\"If there was, in the past, collusion and collaboration
\nbetween economic and political powers, as of now this has to be
\ndiscontinued,\" Kadin chairman Aburizal Bakrie said in his year-
\nend statement yesterday.<\/p>\n
He said that current business activities need fair
\ncompetition, which depends on professionalism, efficiency and
\nproductivity.<\/p>\n
Last year collusion between businessman Eddy Tansil and
\nexecutives of state-owned Bank Pembangunan Indonesia (Bapindo),
\ninvolving the issuance of letters of credit for goods which were
\nnever delivered, caused the bank to lose Rp 1.3 trillion (US$620
\nmillion).<\/p>\n
Eddy was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment, while former
\nBapindo directors Bambang Kuncoro, Sjahrizal, Towil Heryoto and
\nSubekti Ismaun and branch manager Maman Suparman were jailed for
\nterms of between four and nine years.<\/p>\n
Aburizal said yesterday that efficiency and productivity are
\ncore elements in boosting exports, the current growth rate of
\nwhich is slower than that of imports.<\/p>\n
Data compiled by the Central Bureau of Statistic shows that
\nIndonesia's exports increased by only 13.54 percent, to $28.9
\nbillion, in the January-August period, from $25.5 billion in the
\nsame period of last year. Imports, by contrast, rose 31.7 percent
\nto $26.5 billion from $20.1 billion.<\/p>\n
Aburizal said current high interest rates have caused
\nIndonesian exports to be less competitive on world markets.<\/p>\n
He suggested that banks lower interest rates on loans for
\nexporters to about 14 percent per annum.<\/p>\n
He also suggested that the government improve efficiency and
\nproductivity in providing services for the business sector in
\norder to promote the growth of the country's exports which will,
\nin turn, support national economic growth.<\/p>\n
He said the government should also eliminate the monopolies
\nand oligopolies which have hampered the growth of small
\nbusinesses.<\/p>\n
Small businesses need the intervention and protection of the
\ngovernment, he said.(kod)<\/p>",
