        "content": "<p>Kadin: Deregulation still inadequate<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry<br>\n(Kadin) considers the deregulatory measures introduced by the<br>\ngovernment last month to be inadequate for improving the<br>\ncompetitiveness of Indonesian products overseas.<\/p>\n<p>\"The government should follow last month's deregulatory<br>\nmeasures with new ones that have more comprehensive coverage and<br>\na reduction of bureaucratic procedures,\" Kadin's chairman,<br>\nAburizal Bakrie, told reporters here yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>He said last month's measures, for example, are \"too<br>\nselective,\" meaning that they cover only a limited scope of<br>\nbusiness activities.<\/p>\n<p>\"The government should explain why import duties on certain<br>\nproducts are lowered while those on other goods are maintained,\"<br>\nhe said.<\/p>\n<p>The Nov. 27 deregulatory measures, among other things, lower<br>\nimport tariffs on 739 kinds of goods and reduce non-tariff<br>\nbarriers on certain products.<\/p>\n<p>\"The government is apparently less transparent in its policy<br>\nof trying to lower tariffs and eliminating non-tariff barriers,\"<br>\nAburizal said.<\/p>\n<p>However, he acknowledged that the measures will be useful to<br>\nlower costs for production.<\/p>\n<p>\"The government's intention to lower production costs will be<br>\nmore effective if the measures are combined with simplification<br>\nof licensing procedures,\" he added.<\/p>\n<p>Aburizal said businessmen should also respond the government's<br>\nmeasures by reviewing their business strategies.<\/p>\n<p>The executive said Kadin has also welcomed the government's<br>\npolicy of easing restrictions on foreign investment in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>He suggested that the government announce the schedule and the<br>\nscope of the coming deregulatory measures to encourage<br>\nbusinessmen to prepare themselves for the adjustment.<\/p>\n<p>\"By announcing the schedule, businessmen will have more time<br>\nto prepare themselves,\" Aburizal said.
