The increase in fuel prices, and electricity and telephone
\ncharges have no direct impact on the poor people, who have no
\nmotorized vehicles. However, the impact of the price increases --
\nsoaring prices of daily necessities, will hit them hard.<\/p>\n
Also, the 17 percent hike in the fares of economy class trains
\nhas seriously burdened the low-income bracket people, who cannot
\nafford to travel by ship, bus or, of course, plane.
\nThey will the ones who are suffering.<\/p>\n
The rise in telephone toll road charges will only send the
\nprices of commodities even higher.<\/p>\n
Clearly, it is not the upper and middle social classes that
\nwill suffer the impact of these price increases. It is the
\nordinary people on the lowest rung of the social ladder that will
\nbe hardest hit by these price hikes.<\/p>\n
It is ironical that those siphoning off state funds through
\nthe Bank Indonesia Liquidity Support (BLBI) loan scheme --
\ntrillions of rupiah in amount -- have been granted release and
\ndischarge and therefore are now exempted from criminal charges.<\/p>\n
Very clearly, therefore, justice is only a dream of the
\nordinary people, especially given the fact that the assets that
\nBLBI debtors have surrendered to the government are much lower in
\nvalue than their debts.<\/p>\n
Finally, it is the ordinary people that will have to cover
\nthis shortfall.<\/p>\n
