        "content": "<p>Junior swimmers need more attention: Official<\/p>\n<p>SURAKARTA, Central Java (JP): The head of research and<br>\ndevelopment at the Indonesian Swimming Federation (PRSI),<br>\nKristiono Sumono, said on Wednesday numerous problems prevented<br>\nthe federation from developing national junior swimmers.<\/p>\n<p>\"There are plenty of juniors but we still find it difficult to<br>\nfurther develop them as most of them are students,\" he was quoted<br>\nas saying by Antara.<\/p>\n<p>\"PRSI can't do anything about it. That's why we think their<br>\ndevelopment should be synchronized with their studies,\" said the<br>\nformer SEA Games gold medalist on the sidelines of the Indonesian<br>\ninterclub swimming championship at the Tirtomoyo swimming pool<br>\nhere.<\/p>\n<p>Nadwi Syam, who coaches at the Garuda Laut club in Makassar,<br>\nSouth Sulawesi, said a lack of competition at the regional and<br>\nnational levels was to blame for the lack of talented young<br>\nswimmers on the national squad.<\/p>\n<p>\"There are so many junior swimmers taking part in the<br>\nchampionship but none of them have an impressive record. If PRSI<br>\nis serious about its SEA Games preparations, the junior swimmers<br>\nmust receive full attention and training.\"<\/p>\n<p>\"Otherwise, other countries such as Thailand and Singapore<br>\nwill leave us behind,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Nadwi urged PRSI to pay proper attention to any junior<br>\nswimmers who emerged from the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>\"If the Indonesian Swimming Federation wants the growth<br>\nprocess to go smoothly, it should organize more tournaments in<br>\ndifferent places,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Jakarta-based Elfira Swima swimming club won<br>\nthe overall title at the championship. The club, owned by former<br>\nnational swimmer Elfira Rosa Nasution, collected 17 golds, eight<br>\nsilvers and three bronzes, with a total score of 1,130.<\/p>\n<p>The Hiu swimming club of Surabaya trailed closely behind with<br>\n16 golds, six silvers and five bronzes, collecting a score of<br>\n1,098. In third place was Jakarta-based Pari Sakti swimming club<br>\nwith five golds, 13 silvers and 10 bronzes, with a total score of<br>\n910 points.<\/p>\n<p>About 500 swimmers from 70 clubs competed in the event, which<br>\nalso featured water polo, diving and synchronized diving.<\/p>\n<p>The championship also served as one stage in the selection<br>\nprocess for the Kuala Lumpur 2001 SEA Games.
