Junior swimmers need more attention: Official<\/p>\n
SURAKARTA, Central Java (JP): The head of research and
\ndevelopment at the Indonesian Swimming Federation (PRSI),
\nKristiono Sumono, said on Wednesday numerous problems prevented
\nthe federation from developing national junior swimmers.<\/p>\n
\"There are plenty of juniors but we still find it difficult to
\nfurther develop them as most of them are students,\" he was quoted
\nas saying by Antara.<\/p>\n
\"PRSI can't do anything about it. That's why we think their
\ndevelopment should be synchronized with their studies,\" said the
\nformer SEA Games gold medalist on the sidelines of the Indonesian
\ninterclub swimming championship at the Tirtomoyo swimming pool
\nhere.<\/p>\n
Nadwi Syam, who coaches at the Garuda Laut club in Makassar,
\nSouth Sulawesi, said a lack of competition at the regional and
\nnational levels was to blame for the lack of talented young
\nswimmers on the national squad.<\/p>\n
\"There are so many junior swimmers taking part in the
\nchampionship but none of them have an impressive record. If PRSI
\nis serious about its SEA Games preparations, the junior swimmers
\nmust receive full attention and training.\"<\/p>\n
\"Otherwise, other countries such as Thailand and Singapore
\nwill leave us behind,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Nadwi urged PRSI to pay proper attention to any junior
\nswimmers who emerged from the tournament.<\/p>\n
\"If the Indonesian Swimming Federation wants the growth
\nprocess to go smoothly, it should organize more tournaments in
\ndifferent places,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Jakarta-based Elfira Swima swimming club won
\nthe overall title at the championship. The club, owned by former
\nnational swimmer Elfira Rosa Nasution, collected 17 golds, eight
\nsilvers and three bronzes, with a total score of 1,130.<\/p>\n
The Hiu swimming club of Surabaya trailed closely behind with
\n16 golds, six silvers and five bronzes, collecting a score of
\n1,098. In third place was Jakarta-based Pari Sakti swimming club
\nwith five golds, 13 silvers and 10 bronzes, with a total score of
\n910 points.<\/p>\n
About 500 swimmers from 70 clubs competed in the event, which
\nalso featured water polo, diving and synchronized diving.<\/p>\n
The championship also served as one stage in the selection
\nprocess for the Kuala Lumpur 2001 SEA Games. (har\/nvn)<\/p>",
